Classification of Anti-amoebics(Classification of Drugs for amoebiasis)


Drugs for amoebiasis are classified as follows :-

Drug Treatment of Amebiasis
A) According to site of action the anti amoebics are 
Luminal Amebicides:
§ Dichloroacetamides
Diloxanide furoate, Paromomycin
§ Quinolines
Iodoquinol (diidohydroxyquin)
§ Antibiotics
Tetracyclin, Erythromycin
Systemic Amebicides
§ Emetines
Emetine HCl, Dehydroenetine HCL
§ Quinolines
Chloroquine, Iodoquinol
Mixed Amebicides
§ Nitroimidazoles
Metronidazoles, Tinidazole
Therapeutic Classification of Amoebiasis
1 Drugs for  Asymtomatic intestinal infection:
Luminal agent: Diloxanide furoate
Or Iodoquinol
Or Paramomycin
2 Drugs for Mild to moderate intestinal infection:
Metraonidazole/Tinidazole
Diloxanide
3 Drugs for  Severe Intestinal Infection:
Metraonidazole, Tinidazole, Diloxanide
4 Drugs for Amebic Colitis:
Metronidazole + luminal agent (diloxanide)
Tetracycline + Erythromycin
5 Drugs for Amoebic Dysentry:
Metronidazole
Diloxanide furoate
DIQ (diidoquine)
6 Drugs for Hepatic Amoebiasis:
Emetine HCL
Cholroquine Phosphate
Metronidazole
7 Drugs for Hepatic Abscess ameboma & other entraintestinal diseased:
Metronidazole (if fail then chloroquine)
Tinidazole
Diloxanide
