The function of intestine is not only to absorb the digested food. It also secretes mucous and many other minerals(ions).
The mucous secretion and hormones secretion by intestine is done by glands in the intestine while the ions secretion is regulated by CHANNELS or TRANSPORTERS. These are special proteins that work as exchange gates for ionic transfer , transport , and exchange.
